Here are some questions that I’m often asked about my photography sessions. But everyone’s different. So if you have any other questions or concerns, please contact me.
YOUR PORTRAIT SESSION
Where are you based?
I am located in Stocksfield, Northumberland (NE43 7QD)
Do you leave the north?
Yes. I’m originally from the saaarrrrffff, so more than happy to travel anywhere in the UK. I would just ask you to cover my fuel costs and overnight accommodation (where applicable). Unfortunately I’m unable to travel further than 10miles for any sessions under £100. All other sessions include travel of up to 20miles (40 miles roundtrip).
For shoots outside the UK, quotations are made on a case-by-case basis to take into account the time and logistics involved, and the client is responsible for arranging the necessary work permit.
Where do your shoots take place?
Excluding Cake Smash sessions or seasonal child portraits, all my photography sessions take place on location.
To ensure your photographs are as unique as you are, we will work together to choose the ideal location, somewhere that reflects your interests and values. We usually combine some pictures at home with images taken at your family’s favourite places – such as the park, the beach, or the woods. Wherever you feel comfortable. Sessions will be scheduled to best suit you, your family and lighting conditions ideal to your chosen location.
How long will our portrait session last?
It depends on the session booked. But in the case of the traditional portrait session, they tend to last a morning. Ideally we’d start early, usually at 8am, to make the most of the best light and also to ensure that the children are wide-awake first thing in the morning. I usually stay until just before lunch. By having plenty of time, it gives us a lot of leeway if we need to take breaks for naps or snacks, or a bit of quiet-time part way through the morning. Younger children tend to need a mid-morning nap and we can have a cup of coffee during this time.
In the case of my Unscripted and Motherhood sessions, please visit the relevant details page for more information about durations and what’s included. Shorter shoots such as my mini sessions will be more structured to ensure you achieve the images your heart desires in less time.
Is there anything we should bring?
Anything you would normally take for a family day out. Toys. Favourite Teddy. Snacks. Lots of baby wipes! Possibly a change of clothes/outfit.
What happens if it rains?
We live in the UK. I live in Northumberland. Chances are, it will! We’ll work around it. Funnily enough, most photographers prefer cloud cover as the light can often be more flattering, and rain allows for creativity!
Some of the nicest photos you can achieve are families sheltering under a tree, splashing in puddles or snuggling under a blanket next to a fire as the rain pelts the windows. However, if the weather truly is against us, we can of course postpone the session for a more favourable day.
What happens if my child is ill?
If the unfortunate happens, please let me know as soon as possible and we can postpone your session. We’ll wait until they’re chirpy again. Nothing worse than a miserable face at the forefront of your family portraits!
What should we wear?
The most common question! I have created a Pinterest board to help.
Simple, plain-coloured clothes tend to work best. Choose tones that compliment your location and season. Try to steer clear of stripes, too much red on babies, and try not to have half the family dressed in white and the other half in black as the contrast in the images can be distracting.
Oh and if it’s wet, avoid white on legs. Muddy splash marks are not ideal.
AFTER THE PORTRAIT SESSION
Who owns copyright to the images?
I retain the copyright to all my images. However, depending on the session you book you’ll receive the relevant number of print-ready digital files on a USB (or via digital download), which can be taken to any lab for reproduction. You will be granted a license to reproduce the images for your personal use, or to give to family and friends. You are not permitted to enter the pictures into any competitions, or to sell them onto third parties such as stock libraries.
How long will it take to receive my images?
This will depend on the session booked. For smaller sessions, a maximum of one week. For larger sessions, up to four weeks. If you require images quicker, this can be arranged for an additional fee.
