Sunday mornings aren’t quite the same now that I’m a mum.

They used to be lazy.  Breakfast in bed.  Copious cups of coffee.  Snuggles in the nook.  Watching TV.  Up, dressed in time for a pub Sunday lunch and an afternoon stroll to work off that oversized crumble and custard.

These days it’s 5.30am rise.  Wearily I raise my head.  Look at the clock.  Pray the wee one goes back to sleep.  He lures me into a false sense of security as I enter that fluffy space between sleep and wake and then it’s “Mummy” on the intercom.  Sometimes, it’s even “Mummy . . . oi, oi, oi” – the cheeky little monkey!  So, alas, I get up.  A half-sleeping zombie.  Put on my ever so dodgy fleece robe and waddle down the hall to Harry.  But then it’s “MUMMY!!!!!!”  So excited.  So elated to see me.  The fact that CBeebies hasn’t even started escapes me.

On a summers day, the sun comes streaming into our kitchen.  As I open the door you feel the day rushing to greet you.  Harry runs in to grab his toys.  Normally the frying pan full of toy food.  And he beckons nourishment.

On such beautiful days, I feel they warrant a treat.  Today, it’s blueberry pancakes.  Harry loves them.  So does Mummy.  They’re such a joy.  And it feels like a bit of a ritual making them.  I love that Harry can join in.

    Stir, stir, stir.

He plops the berries into the batter and does his best to whisk the mixture.  Whilst I make the pancakes he admires my baking basket full of treasures and potions, nibbles a banana and watches Postman Pat make another blunder with his special delivery.

As we enjoy our pancakes the sun warms the room and requests our presence outside.  Harry’s so eager we don’t even have time to change out of PJs, we just slip his shoes over the top!  Now, I find that there is nothing nicer than hanging the washing in the early hours of the morning.  Call me weird.  But there is an inner peace, I feel, at that moment.  The neighbourhood is so still.  The birds are singing.  The sun is shining.  It’s just glorious.  And Harry clearly feels it too as he loves running through the fresh linen . . . Boo!
