For those yet to book a session with me, you might not know that upon booking you will receive a questionnaire. The idea behind it is that I get to know a little bit about what makes you tick as a family, but in addition to that, it gets you to focus on your family, what you enjoy doing together, and therefore what you cherish most. Hopefully this will steer you towards planning an EveryDay that is not only ‘normal’ in routine for you, but includes the elements that you love most.

My objective with every documentary session is to capture all the little details as well as you and your family at work in your lovely homes. It’s the details that really change as the years pass. The toys on the floor, the instruments the kids play, the mess left strewn across the lawn, the sock pile, the mountains of food they eat every week, the cups of toothbrushes . . . one day, when they finally move out, you’ll be left in that big ol’ house with your memories. And time will be your own again. Because, you won’t be running around picking up that cursed lego, you won’t be pairing all those socks, and you won’t be telling the kids to ‘keep it down.’ And that’s why these photographs and films are so important. That’s why my questionnaire is so important. Because I want to help you capture all those little things that will one day disappear but you hold so dear. So when the house feels a bit quiet, cold and too big, you can open that box of memories and relive that one beautiful EveryDay.

So I digress. What was so nice about the Littler Family’s questionnaire was that Flora and Peter sat down with Katie, Joe and Madeleine and they completed it together. So I received feedback like:
(for the children): What are your favourite things about your family?
- Getting to snuggle mummy (Madeleine)
- Mum and dad taking me to horse-riding (Katie)
- Getting my dinner (Joe)
(for the children): What are some things your mom or dad are always doing?
- Cleaning up (mum), eating (dad), making us do our Kuman (maths), being very nice (sweet!)
I also learnt about Peter’s love of his garden, the children’s musical talents, and their love of exploring the fields surrounding their home.
All of this background reading allowed me to already paint a picture in my mind about this lovely family, what I could expect on the day, and what I MUST capture.
As it was, on the day, as I walked up to their home just outside Hexham, I knew I was in for a treat of a session. What a beautiful home. Peter’s garden was gleaming in the summer sun and the children were already playing in the garden. Now of course Flora and Peter were lovely, but I really loved Katie, Joe and Madeleine. Madeleine was just so cute (asking me 1000 questions) and I loved the bond between her and her older sister. Poor little Joe there, stuck in the middle – but he seemed to me that he could clearly stand his ground against the two girls, and I’m sure Dad has his back when he needs it! I loved that the children seemed so excited about having just a very normal day captured by a photographer and they made specific requests about their own lives that they would like captured – for Katie and Madeleine it was books, books and books, whilst Joe – he was very keen on me getting a photograph of him with a duvet over his head – why, we’ll never know! But I loved the moment nonetheless.
So here are some of my favourite moments from their EveryDay. And I’m so excited that they would like me back in a couple of years . . . I’m looking forward to it already.
