Grandparents are a bridge of love
from the past to present,
and into the future
Every time my folks come up to Northumberland to visit our little Harry, I’m so delighted to see the {connection} that he has with them. Harry gets so excited, sometimes so much he won’t sleep the night before! Their bond seems to get stronger every time they spend a day together.
My folks live in Nottinghamshire, so not too far away, but far away enough that we only see them once a fortnight. But, I always say it’s quality not quantity. The best time they have together though, is when we go to stay with them. I can then let go of the reigns and the boy is under the watchful eye of Nanna and Grandad and he just has so much fun. Apart from treating Nanna and Grandad like they’re simply toys, his real favourite thing to do is help Grandad. Whatever it may be, moving blocks, cutting the grass, filling up the bird feeders, sweeping. He loves to be a little helper.
Having lost one of my Grandfathers at a young age, I understand the true value of a photograph. My mum’s father passed away when I was just four. As you can imagine, there are not that many photographs of my Grandad and I. And I don’t really remember the {connection} we had. I do, however, remember the relationships I had with my other Grandparents. And yet, whilst we have more photographs of us together, it was the 80s, and most to the images we took back then were pretty posed.
I have one memory that has remained with me of my Grandad . . . it may have been the last time they stayed with us before he sadly passed away. I snuck into our playroom, where my Nanna and Grandad lay on some questionable put-you-up-beds, and snuggled in under the duvet. They were clearly taken aback by the early rising of this cheeky 4 year old. The only conversation I ever remember having with my Grandad is about how when you wake up in the morning you’re not as strong as when you’ve really woken up. We spent some time trying to make fists, squeezing our hands so tight that our nails dug into our skin, but I remember that I couldn’t do it – as I wasn’t strong enough as I hadn’t really woken up. Now I look back on that moment, I so wish there was a fly on the wall capturing that moment. Me, snuggled in with my Grandad, whom I now barely remember, squeezing each others hands – me looking down on his giant (they seemed giant then) hands as he held me in his arms. Brings a tear to my eye as I recall that memory and the lack there of.
So . . . I really want to make it my mission to ensure I capture Harry’s {connection} with his Nanna and Grandad. Because, it’s simply beautiful. The joy they bring each other. It just radiates.
Back in July, I spent a day documenting their every move. And as it’s Grandparents Day here in the UK, and as my folks have decided to go on holiday, I thought I would share their story with you all today.
So, Nanna and Grandad, this is for you. Enjoy the slideshow. Don’t worry, you’ll get copies when you get home! Thank you for being the most fabulous of Grandparents. As you can see from the photographs, you really do make our little Harry one happy little fella. xxx
