Why I hired a photographer to capture our EveryDay
Andy, my husband, is no different to all the others. When I said I wanted to book our own day in the life photographer session, he thought I was mad. Looking to waste money. Couldn’t understand why I wanted to pay someone to do what I could do myself.
But that’s the point. I can’t. I can’t do what I do. I can take beautiful photographs of Harry and Andy together, but where am I? I can get out the tripod, but those pictures are then staged. They don’t feel like true moments.
I wanted to capture us. Raw. True. Unscripted. I wanted to capture how it feels to be mum, wife, family. I wanted just one day immortalised so that Harry can relive it one day, and so can Andy and I.
But most importantly, I wanted one day I won’t forget. The breakfast we cooked. The mess we made. The walk we took. The pumpkins we carved. The lunch we ate. The story we read. I will NEVER forget that day with my boys. The love that I feel for them. The joy that they give me.
I cannot do that. I have tried. I have carried a tripod around with me all day. And it’s just not the same. Everything feels unnatural. I feel self-conscious. I criticise every image. Shots are more often than not out of focus. And there’s something missing. The photographer. The craft. The eye. That’s what we pay for. The creative execution of each and every shot. To tell the story. Everything in that frame matters. And when you’re doing, what is essentially a selfie, it’s so hard to create art out of life.
Added to that, I wanted the magic. The client experience. The anticipation for our story to come through the door. Why shouldn’t we get to enjoy that too? Have someone else do all the hard work. . . you know that it takes days to edit a day in the life session right? Trawling through all the hundreds of images, cull them, edit them, save them to disc. For once, it meant that those images, they’re done. They’re safe. I have literally tens of 1000s of images of our family, that are festering away on various hard drives – they all need editing . . . one day I hope to get to do it – one day – that’s what I always say.
But in the meantime, I have this one day. This one day completely immortalised. Forever. That we can all look back on in 20 years time. And I’m so grateful.

p.s – I have so caught the bug now. It’s been about 6 months since we had our session with Angela and I cannot wait to book more photo sessions for the future. With Angela and other photographers. As I look back on these images, it melts my heart. I’m so glad we captured that one day. And so now, I want to capture more. And create a shelf full of photobooks. Could having photo sessions become an addiction? I think it could . . .!
