At Grandmas House – Photographing the generations

I love doing multigenerational family shoots. There’s something about photographing the generations in one family….something about capturing that special relationship between generations especially between grandparents and grandchildren. It’s a completely different relationship from that of parent and child. It’s more simple, more pure and untainted by discipline and the stresses of daily life. 

A treasure trove of stuff

Grandmas’ house holds a treasure trove of stuff. A box of costume jewellery, handmade wooden vehicles, a huge ottoman perfect for hiding in and not to mention an un-ending supply of sweets. This is their domain, they’re boss here, Number 1. My Mum and Dad now belong to him and he loves it, I do too. They scoop him up, genuinely loving every minute. They have the energy and the patience and hey I’m already having a sit down!

Grandma’s house has the novelty of stairs and there’s nothing quite like bob sleighing down on your bum. The boy is older now so sprints upstairs and prefers the bannister on his return journey. He always makes a beeline for the understairs..the home of all his toys. And even though It takes a couple of trips from the living the room but soon, his cars and garage are all set up.

Mum and Dad’s house is pristine, absent of mess but there is always room for the boy. The kitchen holds his drawings and his creations are dotted everywhere. Even that hand painted sploggy painted pebble sits proudly alongside the other pebbles on the fake gas fire. The boy just loves messing with Grandma’s knitting counter… it’s been a thing between them for years. ‘You been messing with my counter you little bee?’…she often shouts all the time, smiling. ‘Noooooo Grandma’ he replies, giggling to himself.

Remember, we said we wouldn’t take them for granted. 

I’m lucky that my boy has that relationship with his Grandparents, it means he’s got more than just us, there’s backup. And of course the boy is ‘no bother’ for Grandma and Grandad…’ no bother at all!

I remember COVID and just how hard it was just not seeing my mum and Dad and how the boy asked always when he could go and see them. I also remember saying that we wouldn’t take them for granted…that I’d make more time for them.

In the meantime, here’s a glimpse into one Grandma’s house – not my boy’s Grandma.  This is Rowena’s Mum.  Her kids Grandma.  And this is the house Rowena and her brother grew up in, here in Northumberland.  Full of family history and comforts … it’s not just people that should be photographed – the home is as much a part of our story – so I love capturing these little details too.  Video
