Recently our little group of Yummy Mummys introduced Babysitting tokens. A revelation! Our little ones are all two now. They enjoy each other’s company. They can be relatively well behaved. And they know the other mummys in the group well. It made sense to start calling on each other for a hand every now and again.
Harry and I have now had the pleasure of three [babysitting] play dates. The third being with the delightful little Heidi. Harry’s first girly date. And what fun they had. Yes, I know I should have been playing with them, but these two were so cute, how could I not grab my camera?
The date started off well. Kate, Heidi’s Mum dropped the little lady off about 10ish as she had a meeting to go to. At first, Heidi was a little bit timid, but nothing a bit of Peppa Pig and JUMPING ON THE BED couldn’t sort out!
After the jumping on the bed seemed to put little Heidi at ease, we then went back downstairs to where some real drama unfurled. As I made hot chocolate for the two, Heidi found Harry’s balloon doggy. Which she popped! Ohhhhhh. How was Harry aggrieved by that. The next thing that occurred, was simply the cutest thing . . . the secret life of two year olds . . .
So the funniest thing in all that was that I asked Heidi to kiss Harry to say sorry for popping the dog, as Harry was sad. And either Heidi just decided to ignore me, Harry just misheard me or natural instinct took hold, but I loved how Heidi naturally played hard to get and Harry completely went after her, so determined to get that kiss!
So after the drama, they were friends again. Maybe more than friends? And it was time for hot chocolate, cookies, more Peppa Pig (kids love that stuff) and then Harry wanted to show Heidi his room – ohhhhh!
So, I think you can safely say, that this playdate thing is a huge success. Harry just loves his little buddies around to play. I think a lot of parents are nervous to start babysitting other people’s children as they’re not sure what is an appropriate age. Well, two seems to have worked perfectly for us. As the sitter, you can take your eye off them for just long enough to sort out snacks/lunch/grab your camera, they are able to play nicely together, and they’re not constantly crying for their Mummy. And I genuinely think it’s good for them – especially if they don’t have any brothers or sisters of their own. I can’t wait for the next one. I certainly know Harry can’t!
